Two Factor Authentication (2FA) Updates and Survival Tips

Charles Choy, Head of Cybersecurity Operations

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is an enhanced mechanism for logon. After entering your password, you will be prompted to confirm your access with a designated device (e.g. your mobile phone). Essentially this helps prevent unauthorized access even if the password of a user is compromised. The 2FA was launched as an optional feature in early 2017; and has become a mandatory protection for all staff and students now in view of the escalating cybersecurity threats all around the world. Yet, not all online services are compatible with 2FA currently but the list of services and applications supported by 2FA is steadily growing, driven by the respective level of cybersecurity risk. Please refer to the following for an up-to-date list as well as further details:

  • Bought a new mobile phone
  • Forgot to bring your mobile to office
  • Lost your mobile
  • Travel overseas
  • In a place there is no mobile signal
